This is a black "Joka" made of Mino-ware. The Joka, which literally translates to "black direct fire," is a vessel used for heating up drinks like sake or shochu; the kettle is made from heat-resistant clay, allowing it to be placed directly over low heat.

This sake set originated in Mino in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Mino-ware is the most popular style in Japan, accounting for 60% of the country's ceramics. Mino-yaki is valued for its beauty and durability, making it popular for everyday use and, of course, special occasions.
The Best Way to Enjoy Shochu
1. Mix shochu with water to your preferred ratio and let it rest for 2–3 days.
2. Heat it to a warm temperature on low heat using the Joka (ensure the bottom is dry).
3. Once warm, pour it into your ochoko and sip slowly.
The taste changes greatly depending on the type of water and how long you let it rest. Those differences become even more pronounced when warmed, offering a richer experience.
