This plate originated in Mino in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Mino-ware is the most popular style in Japan, accounting for 60% of the country's ceramics. Mino-yaki is valued for its beauty and durability, making it popular for everyday use and, of course, special occasions.
Sunaji Ainagashi (砂地藍流し) is a ceramic glazing technique used by artisans combining different types of glazes to create unique textures and colours. For this particular piece, an indigo/blue glaze is applied on the rim to mimic the flow of water over a warm brown sandy-textured surface.
